the zoo story

Some of the most fascinating introspections into humanity focus on the relationships people forge with each other. As one of the more emotionally capable species on the planet, at times we find ourselves relentlessly needy. This is a particularly favourable characteristic if we are to coexist with one another, however, this perpetual yearning to connect can have detrimental consequences for the individual.

Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story explores this idea of interconnection and the effects that loneliness and isolation can have upon a person’s life. These effects are illustrated through the meeting of two socially and emotionally opposite people on a bench in New York City’s Central Park. This setting is a particularly significant one, and the park bench provides the perfect environment for a chance encounter in a place where human interaction seems virtually impossible.
