The Taming of
the Shrew is one of Shakespeares most charming, funny plays,
drawing audiences with its timeless characters and the witty repartee
between them. It must be said, however, that Shakespeares portrayal
of gender in this play sits quite uncomfortably with contemporary values
and notions of equality. In this production, director Katie Johnson
seeks to address this incongruity by re-examining the relationship between
Katharina and Petruchio, suggesting a more complex and balanced power
play between them. The ever humorous, but oh-so-compelling chemistry
between Kat and her tamer is transformed into a groovy 1960s
romance between a fiery, bra-burning feminist and a flirtatious, swaggering
and irresistibly charismatic ladies man. You will find this reinterpretation
rife with gags, innuendo and un/resolved sexual tension.
